Uncut Poets

Uncut Poets is a monthly poetry night which meets on the last Tuesday of the month at the Exeter Phoenix, and online on the second Tuesday of the month.

It is co-hosted by Chrissy Banks and myself. Recent readers have included Greta Stoddart, Fiona Benson, Vishvantara, Tom Weir, Chaucer Cameron and Helen Dewbery, Carrie Etter, Claire Crowther, Alasdair Paterson, Lynne Wycherley, Endre Ruset and Harry Man.

Open-micers are welcomed, and those interested in reading at either the live or online event should contact Chrissy Banks in the first instance at chrissybankspoems@gmail.com.

Following last month’s sublime performance by Bristolian poets Kaycee Hill, Naomi Madlock and Kate Noakes as Braid, Chrissy Banks and I are delighted to invite you to a very special evening on the last Tuesday of the month featuring Penelope Shuttle.

🎙️ Penelope Shuttle has lived in Falmouth since 1970. Her thirteenth collection, Lyonesse, appeared from Bloodaxe Books in June 2021, was Observer Poetry Book of the Month, and long listed for the Laurel Prize. It has been described as ‘…a singular, arresting and moving book’.

🎙️ Noah, a pamphlet, appeared in September 2023 from Broken Sleep Books.

🎙️ Shuttle is President of the Falmouth Poetry Group.

🎙️ Her new collection, History of the Child, published in February 2026 by Bloodaxe Books, is a highly evocative exploration of childhood, memory and imagination, blending personal and historical perspectives. The book’s themes include parenting, grief, nature, emotional recovery and connections to the past, guided by the idea of childhood as a transformative and rebellious space.

    About Me

An award-winning poet and educator based in the South West of England.

Matt is a fine communicator who engages audiences and groups quickly and easily. He enables and energises people, whatever their age or background. He is not afraid to explore unusual routes to engage people and it is this precisely that so often generates a successful outcome. People are surprised by him and, in turn, they frequently surprise themselves.
