Mentoring

In addition to the workshops and courses I run, I offer a range of mentoring services.

Whether you are just beginning to write or are getting a pamphlet together, mentoring sessions offer a close reading of your work with a view to presenting your ideas as effectively as possible.

You’ll learn new ways to organise and structure your work, and consider how your writing works on both a local and holistic level. We will discuss lineation, clarity and form as well as effective ways to edit. In addition, we can discuss the most appropriate places to submit your work – from literary journals to competitions.

One-to-One Discussions

How it works – send me a set of between 6 and 10 poems to look at. We then discuss them in an hour-long Zoom meeting.

one-off = £80
for a set of three = £200
for a set of five = £350

One-to-One Discussions plus written feedback

How it works – send me a set of between 6 and 10 poems to look at. I then return an annotated document including comments as to where lines and ideas are working or things might be improved, tweaked or revised. A one-hour Zoom consultation follows, in which we go through the notes and discuss any consequent changes you have made to the poems.

one-off = £120
for a set of three = £300
for a set of five = £500

Pamphlet Package

A service to help poets putting together a pamphlet.

How it works – send me a manuscript of up to 25 pages of poems (as well as contents page and notes). I read them closely and in a follow-up 2 hour Zoom we discuss each poem in detail with consideration of order, themes and what is working well and less well in the pamphlet as a whole. We can also discuss different publishing options.

cost = £500

Testimonials

Matt has been extremely helpful with my poetry generally, and specifically in putting together a pamphlet. From the tiniest detail in a single poem to the broad-brush of how a collection flows together, he is incredibly insightful and I have learnt a huge amount from him.

Matt is a fine communicator who engages audiences and groups quickly and easily. He enables and energises people, whatever their age or background.
